December 9, 2012 11:49 pm

The Fiji women’s hockey side has now become the team to beat in the Oceania Pacific Cup and World Series League in Suva.

The Shaun Corrie coached side has two straight wins – the first was beating Vanuatu yesterday 17-1 and this morning the side upset NZ Maori women 1 goal to nil.

Mid-fielder, Ateca Fatufago slapped in the winner with Corrie happy with the result.

“It was a big win for us especially coming off yesterday’s game we played the last match of the day then played the first game this morning and it was quite demanding on the girls. I’m very happy with the girls, they accepted the challenge. We scored early then the Maoris put a lot of pressure on us. We’re also thankful for the weather, it was very nice and humid and it played to our advantage. Both teams got tired and I guess our girls faired a bit better in the conditions.”

Next up for the Fiji women is Pacific Island rivals, Papua New Guinea at 4pm tomorrow at the National Hockey Centre.

Fiji men face NZ Maori at 3pm today.
