Fiji through to quarterfinals

The Vodafone Fiji 7s has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Tokyo 7s after an unconvincing 35-14 win over Hong Kong.

Halfback Eminoni Nasilasila scored two of Fiji’s five tries with the other tries coming from Vatemo Ravouvou, Semi Kunatani and Isake Katonibau.

Fiji once again had a man in the sin-bin after Apisai Domolailai was disciplined for a late tackle.

Fiji will now battle England for top spot in Pool A at 8.30pm with the winner to face the top seed from Pool B in the quarterfinals tomorrow, which could be either New Zealand or Australia.

The Vodafone Fiji 7’s team has qualified for the Cup quarter finals of the Wellington 7’s.

The team defeated Wales in the second encounter 42-19 while they beat Portugal 31-19 in their first match.

A strong first half performance saw the Fijians take a 28-0 half time lead as Semi Kunatani grabbed a brace while Savenaca Rawaca and Jasa Veremalua also crossed over in the first period.

Wales came back strongly in the second spell scoring three unanswered tries to close the gap to 28-19 but tries from Manueli Laqai and Vatemo Ravovou sealed the win for the Ben Ryan coached side.

The team’s last pool match will be against Australia at 5.54pm after which the pool winner will be decided.

Meanwhile in other matches played so far Australia beat Portugal 29-0, USA thrashed France 38-7, England beat PNG 29-0, South Africa beat Japan 24-7, Samoa lost to Scotland 14-12, Argentina beat Kenya 31-7, hosts New Zealand eased past Canada 26-5 , Australia defeated Wales 36-5 while South Africa lost to France 22-5.

Fiji has sealed a spot in the Cup quarterfinals of the Oceania 7s tournament in Australia.

The Nasoni Roko-led side defeated Cook Islands in its last pool match 34-0, overpowering the opponents with strong defense and pace and strength in attack.

Jerry Tuwai was one of the standout players for Fiji, scoring a try in all three matches.

Meanwhile the Telecom Fijiana side lost to New Zealand in its third encounter 24-7.

The Iliesa Tanivula coached side will face Tonga at 8am tomorrow.
