Fiji men cause biggest OPC upset

The Fiji men’s hockey side has caused the biggest upset in the Oceania Pacific Cup and World Series League at Laucala Bay.

They defeated Australian Country 3 goals to one in a penalty shootout after being locked 1-all at fulltime.

Adrian Smith, Lee Vahn Dutta and captain, Hector Smith Jnr with goalkeeper, Richard Eyre saved the day for the hosts to keep Fiji as the unbeaten side in the tournament so far.

Fiji chalked up the first points to lead the visitors however, the Aussies managed to score after a shot at goal came off a Fiji defender’s stick.

New IHF rules states that if both sides come to a draw at fulltime, a penalty shootout will take place.

This was the case for the Fiji men yesterday against the NZ Maoris where Fiji emerged winners, taking the match by five goals to four.

The Fiji women are up next against Papua New Guinea.
