Women from various religious group met for the first time today to look at ways to better deal with violence against women and children.
House of Sarah Representative, Tupou Vere says the meeting aims to empower women to come forward and share their experiences so that the culture of silence on such matters can be broken.
“We could perhaps in time work a lot more closely together, because we are already doing work in our own respective communities, but we’d like to reach out to one another and share what skills we may have, what resources and materials we have regarding this problem we have in our country.”
President of the Fiji Muslim Women’s League Nisha Buksh says issues as such must never be taken lightly as it impacts a lot of lives.
Meanwhile, last year around 72% of women faced some form of violence of which intimate partner violence topped the list.
