Usage of shortened English words a concern

Social media has exposed the standard and quality of the English language by some people in country.

This was highlighted by Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while launching the Speak in English for Success Programme at Gospel High School this week

Sayed-Khaiyum says the standard of English has dropped as many people tend to use short cut words.

“In social media or when people use text messaging, they seem to use a different type of English language that they use. People cut words short and even though people cut words short that has now become the norm so please be mindful of that.”

Students have been urged to use social media wisely as it’s a great source of information but it can also be a negative tool.
