Tilapia farm clusters to improve production: Koroilavesau

The Fisheries Ministry together with SPC is working on establishing tilapia farm clusters in the Western, Northern and Central Divisions.

Minister Responsible, Semi Koroilavesau says the clusters will serve as an opportunity for farmers and the Ministry to share cost, equipment, transportation and ideas to better farming.

Koroilavesau says building awareness and educating tilapia farmers will be one of the major focuses through the establishing of clusters.

“The Ministry has awareness programs, it is carried out during national events and roadshows while our training program is carried out in every division. Furthermore, we are being assisted by SPC in this program, they work closely with the ministry in terms of providing material and training to farmers in regards to Harper Breeding method.”

Koroilavesau says with the Ministry undertaking a new production method, the Harper Breeding, training sessions will also be taken to Vanua Levu.

He adds the Harper Breeding method has been successfully trailed and is being used in Monfort Boys Town and Nausori village
