Tidal surge threats for Fiji

December 17, 2012 4:05 am

Fiji now faces a threat of tidal surges later tonight.

The PS for Information Sharon Smith-Johns says people need to move to evacuation centers as the worst is later to come this evening especially for those living along the coast of Viti Levu.

“People living around the coastal areas are advised to be well aware of the tidal surge in particular if the wind is blowing off the sea coming inland. This high tide is particularly high at the moment so between 9:30 and 10pm tonight, they’re predicting that the high tide may be 3m above what is normal and if you’re living on that coast please be aware of that and move to safety before this occurs.”

Meanwhile, the flash flood warning remains in place for the Suva areas.

People in low lying areas need to be constantly listening to the radio for weather bulletins and the latest update.

She adds Safety is first and if you’re not sure, get to higher grounds and be safe throughout the night.
