Thousands in Central division affected by water cut

April 1, 2019 8:14 am

Thousands of Fijians in the Central division have been affected by intermittent water supply since Friday.

This is due to a burst main between the Waila water treatment plant and the Wainibuku reservoir which occurred last Tuesday.

The Water Authority says this burst 600mm water main transports clean and treated water to the Wainibuku Reservoir, which then feeds the other reservoirs.

Due to the unfavorable weather conditions and ground conditions, the water authority engineers were unable to conduct repairs.

However, they were only able to isolate the leaking water main and allow two out of the three water mains to carry clean water from the treatment plant to the Wainibuku Reservoir.

On Wednesday, due to the high demand for clean drinking water, efforts to refill and stabilize the major reservoirs forced WAF to extend its disruption notice to 6am Friday morning.

Since then, WAF worked to refill and stabilize water supply to areas feeding from Tovata, Wainibuku and Nagatugatu reservoirs, however the demand for water continued.

For the remaining area, WAF continued to work to refill the reservoirs to the areas feeding from Tacirua, Dokanaisuva and Colo-i-Suva until 6 this morning.

The Water Authority says water carting services were arranged to cart water to affected areas during this unplanned temporary water disruption period.
