The Sugar Research Institute will be carrying out a pilot project under which they will plant cane themselves on some of the fields for farmers.

Acting chief executive, Prem Naidu, says this way the Institute will be able to know whether the new cane varieties are suitable on certain fields.

He says once the farmers are ready to plant, the staff members from the Institute will visit their farms to test the soil first.
