The cane crushing figures as at 3rd of November shows that sugar production is up by 22 percent.

However, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the important thing to note is that the tonne of cane per tonne of sugar or TCTS is dramatically low.

Bainimarama says the industry is becoming more efficient and that shows that the reforms are becoming successful.

“Not long ago it was taking more than 13 tonnes of cane to produce a tonne of sugar. Now what we call the TCTS is down to 8.1 – in other words just over 8 tonnes of cane to produce a tonne of sugar. It shows that the reforms that is being made a working and the investments that we have made a paying dividends.”

Bainimarama says the new ratio shows that Fiji is coming closer to the world benchmark.
