Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya is urging students to lead the fight against the waste crisis, warning that plastic could outnumber fish in the ocean within four years if nothing changes.
Tabuya says this work is critical to protecting marine life and safeguarding a sustainable food supply for future generations.
The Minister is urging students to set the example by using the right bins and helping change habits nationwide.
“You are the champions. You are the agents of change. To ensure that we protect our ocean, that our fish will be able to survive without all those plastics, the turtles, the whales, the sharks, the octopuses, whatever, marine life.”
Tabuya says that while special bins have been placed in communities, many people still mix rubbish, undermining recycling efforts.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa says these initiatives must start at the grassroots level.
The Ministry will roll out training next week through the Department of Environment, teaching students and teachers how to properly separate rubbish and recycle bottles and cans.
