Seven men remanded in custody

Seven men who were arrested following a drug raid in Kadavu last week appeared in the Suva Magistrates court today.

They are facing separate charges of possession of illicit drugs, criminal intimidation and resisting arrest.

Ameo Maravou, Iliesa Kamunaga, Ratu Kadavu Sivonaivalu, Anare Maravu, Ioane Malakai, Semi Tuikawakawa and Ratu Ilaitia Lewanavanua appeared before Magistrate Waleen George today.

It is alleged that Maravou, Kamunaga, Sivonaivalu, Malakai and Tuikawakawa cultivated marijuana ranging from 1.1kg to 8kg this month.

It is also alleged that Maravu was found in possession of 2.6kg marijuana.

The seventh accused Lewanavanua is alleged to have intimidated a police officer and also resisted arrest.

Magistrate Waleen George has remanded the seven men in custody and has ordered them to file a proper bail application

The Suva Magistrate has transferred Maravou and Tuikawakawa’s case to the High court while other cases have been transferred to the Chief Magistrate’s court.

The matter will be called on 1st December in Suva High court and the Magistrates court.
