The Western Taskforce comprising representatives of the police, business community and government officials have lifted a temporary suspension on operations of scrap metal dealers.

The taskforce met with scrap metal business operators in Lautoka this afternoon.

Commissioner Western, Joeli Cawaki says there are several conditions to the lifting of the suspension.

He said scrap metal dealers will have to align their operations to requirements of the Scrap Metal Decree, Public Order Decree and National Security Decree.

“We’ve given them a list of things that they need to do. We are giving them time from Friday this week until Friday next week. We will again be going in to conduct checks on their yards and documentation for them to align themselves to the requirements of the decree.”

Scrap metal licenses were earlier temporarily suspended due to widespread theft of infrastructure and assets belonging to major service providers in the country such as Telecom Fiji Limited and Fiji Electricity Authority
