“During its work the commissioners had the good fortune of meeting thousands of Fijians and to listen to their views and recommendations for the new constitution. We are grateful to them and to the many organizations that made submissions to us.”

In handing over the draft document, Professor Ghai, called on the nation not to lose focus on the objectives of creating a new constitution.

President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau reminded everyone of the need to make a constitution that would stand for now and for the future.

“It is also imperative, given our history that the new constitution, is enduring. It must not be only for the present. It must be relevant for our future generations.”

Ratu Epeli will now peruse the draft before handing it to the Constituent Assembly for debate and amendments.

It will then go to a judicial tribunal for vetting to ensure compliance before the President finally signs off on it.
