Persons with albinism need the same respect as any other person especially when they are diagnosed with cancer.

Albinism Fiji Project Coordinator, Sainimili Tawake confirms there are one hundred and eighty people with albinism in the country and two have been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Tawake says people with albinism often feel isolated and face many forms of discrimination.

“We are labelled at many times we are referred to as " Kaivalangi ni Viti" or “Rea” , a very deragoty comment and also many times people are ashamed of us, is it because we lack the color but I guess we are all human beings.”

Tawake says albinism education for healthcare workers, teachers and family members is also necessary.
