A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Agriculture Ministry and Biotec Limited in a bid to maintain a sustainable seed system.

Biotec Limited is Fiji’s first commercial tissue culture agriculture laboratory and nursery working to mass produce, disease free and high-quality planting materials through commercial tissue culture.

Agriculture Minister Inia Seruiratu says Biotech limited will supply 3000 tissue cultured dalo variety to the agriculture ministry for the Koronivia research station.

“Benefits of this collaboration will be the availability of disease-free planting materials for growers especially in the areas like Taveuni which is not being permitted for Dalo cycles due to Taro beetle threat.”

Seruiratu says this partnership will ensure a large number of planting materials are made available in a short period of time.

He adds seeds that will increase crop productivity and farmer’s income will also be made available.
