More litter officers trained

The Ministry of Environment has trained close to 200 litter officers this year in an effort to combat the growing litter problem in the country.

While speaking at the Litter Prevention Officers Training for Central Division, Permanent Secretary for Environment Joshua Wycliffe highlighted to the participants that part of their responsibility is to prevent people from discarding rubbish irresponsibly in their communities.

Wycliffe says that with the responsibility of litter prevention comes the responsibility of awareness.

He also highlighted that Fiji currently has a total of 600 Litter Prevention Officers in different divisions across the country.

“At the end of the training today they will be formally given a certificate for being litter prevention officers so with that certificate they will be empowered to issue an infringement notice.”

Similar training was also conducted in the Western and the Northern divisions in order to build the capacity of other Public Officers within the two divisions under this Initiative.
