Following an increase in typhoid cases in Naitasiri and Namosi province, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is taking pro-active steps to nip the problem in the bud.
The Ministry is working closely with the Rural and Maritime Development Ministry, divisional commissioner’s office and Roko Tuis to identify new water sources and construct proper toilet facilities for the villagers in the two provinces.
Minister, Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete says so far they recorded a total of 48 cases in Naitasiri of which 34 were confirmed and 14 were suspected.
In Namosi, 11 cases were reported of which six were confirmed and 5 were suspected cases.
Dr Waqainabete says one of the main causes of the increase in cases that they’ve identified is improper toilet facilities and water sources for these villagers.
Some of the villagers are relying on river water for cooking, drinking and other daily chores.
The Ministry has successfully been able to consult and negotiate with the landowners to secure a clean water source for the villages.
The Ministry has also so far constructed water seal toilet facilities in the villages.
The Minister has commended the partnership with the villagers in these areas.
