McCully to visit Fiji

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully will visit Fiji today to discuss the response to Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston with the Fiji Government and look at how New Zealand can support recovery efforts.

McCully says the damage to property, and loss of life caused by Cyclone Winston in parts of Fiji is almost unprecedented in the Pacific.

He says NZs total contribution to the relief effort now stands at FJ$3.2 millionwhile New Zealand Defence Force assets and personnel are helping to deliver supplies and repair damage to critical infrastructure.

More than 300 engineers, medics and support staff are heading to Fiji, which was devastated by Cyclone Winston a week ago.

The HMNZS Canterbury is transporting 37 vehicles, including three helicopters, for its month-long mission.
