Man jailed for life for murder

A man has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 19 years to be served after which a pardon by the President may be considered.

33 year-old Joeli Masicola is charged with the murder of Jone Nabaisila, attempted murder of his wife, Tavenisa Lewavavai and act with intent to cause grievous harm of a Karalaini Loaloa.

On February 21st last year Masicola took a cane knife and struck his wife, and the deceased, whom she was in a relationship with.

He then turned and attempted to strike the aunt, Karalaini Loaloa and after severing her finger, he fled the scene.

In summing up the case Judge Salesi Temo said the use of a cane knife in committing a crime is always a serious matter and that the court must act to discourage people using cane knives in committing crimes.
