Konrote re-appointed for another term

It took less than half an hour for the reappointment of President Major General Retired Jioji Konusi Konrote to be finalized in Parliament’s special sitting today.

It wasn’t without controversy though with Opposition Whip and SODELPA MP moving a point of order that the standing orders were being usurped.

The Speaker of the House – Dr. Jiko Luveni overruling him.

“The process on the appointment of the President is clearly outlined in section 84, subsection two of the constitution and standing order 136 which provides that.”

In response, the Opposition MPs and SODELPA members than staged a walkout forfeiting their presidential nomination.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama then put forth his nomination with no vote necessary.

“Madam Speaker, in accordance with the constitution of the Republic of Fiji, I nominate his Excellency, Major General Jioji Konusi Konrote to be reappointed as the President of the Republic of Fiji, vinaka.”

The reappointment and final term for President Konrote sealed in Fiji’s history with Dr. Jiko acknowledgment.

“In accordance with section 84, subsection 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, his Excellency, Major General Retired Jioji Konusi Konrote is reappointed as the President of the Republic of Fiji.”

Meanwhile President Major General (Retrd) Jioji Konusi Konrote has been reappointed for a second term of three years.
