A cane payment announced for the 2014 season is not the final cane payment.
Fiji Sugar Corporation Executive Chair Abdul Khan has clarified this payout has come from excess funds from the last season and is not the final payment.
The seventy one cent payout is the wash up payment and isn’t common in every season as its only paid out when the FSC finds extra money after settling its books.
Khan adds the news of the payment has been manipulated to make it seem like a low amount.
“People who either want to understand or don’t understand how the industry works, make a bid song and dance about it which is unfortunate because they don’t provide the right information. It provides a misunderstanding among our poor farmers.”
The FSC says the wash up is traditionally low because it’s derived from money left over and it isn’t actual payment owed to farmers in the first place.
Meanwhile, the FSC is working on a special cane payment in time for Diwali.
