Plastic waste is polluting our oceans and it has become a major issue as it is affecting the marine life.

Fisheries Officer, Meli Raicebe says this pratice needs to stop now as many companies are also disposing chemicals to the ocean directly.

“One of the big things that Fiji is facing now is plastics and how this has actually taken over our shores. So being mindful of that, when you actually have all this pollution floating in the ocean or being part of the ocean – it actually affects wild life and fish species that call the ocean their home.”

Raicebe says plastic waste is also affecting seabirds, turtles and other organisms and this needs to stop.

He says the ministry is keeping a close eye on this issue.
