Fiji Navy records a successful rescue rate

The Fiji Navy has reported an 80-per cent success rate in search and rescue at sea in the past decade.

Navy commander, John Fox says this year alone they responded to 20 emergency calls for people at sea and rescued many of them.

The most common emergency has been people drifting at sea and outboard engines breaking down.

Commander Fox says the main challenge now is the size of Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Fiji Navy has 9 patrol boats covering 1.2 million square kilometres of the EEZ.
