EU committed to revitalizing sugar sector

The European Union has indicated that they will provide more than forty million dollars of assistance to the sugar sector.

Head of Corporation at the EU Delegation for the Pacific, Christoph Wagner says they are committed to reviving the Fijian sugar industry.

Christoph Wagner says the EU already has some ongoing programs which is benefiting the Fijian farmers.

“By looking at the population obviously by helping the farmers, their families, and their communities will also increase the productivity of sugar which will be important for Fiji’s sugar industry.”

Wagner also reveals how the assistance will be utilized to revitalize the sugar sector.

“So we will use the budget support so we will work with the government on a policy which should be an inclusive policy and there is now efforts on the way to launch a policy on sugar and there is already a policy on agriculture and we will support this policy of the government.”

The Fijian government has also introduced a number of initiatives to help sugarcane farmers – as around 200,000 people depend on the sector for their livelihood.
