UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will be discussing climate financing opportunities in the Pacific when he meets with the Pacific Island Country leaders on Wednesday.
UN Resident Coordinator for the Pacific, Sanaka Samarasinha says the Pacific region is feeling the full brunt of climate change, therefore, financing is vital.
Samarasinha says the UNSG will also be visiting places currently receiving these funds to see what is being done on the ground.
“Climate financing is one of the most important aspects. We believe as the UN and Secretary-General believe that it needs to be addressed not only to increase the amount of funding for mitigation, for adaptation, reducing emissions but also to ensure the effectiveness of the financing.”
The UNSG will arrive in Fiji tomorrow and will be part of a bilateral meeting with leaders of the Pacific Community on Wednesday.
He will also visit our Parliament and climate change youth activists from the University of the South Pacific on Thursday.
On Friday he will fly to Tuvalu and return to Fiji to depart for Vanuatu on Saturday.
The UNSG will return to New York afterward.
