Bus drivers can accept cash for the payment of the purchase of a disposable card.

Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has again stressed this after questions were raised on the e-ticketing system.

Opposition MP Prem Singh says the system should be reviewed.

Singh says under the e-ticketing system drivers cannot collect cash, however, he says this needs to be reviewed as they will have to provide change to the passengers.

Sayed- Khaiyum says this is not the case.

“The drivers at this point in time actually can accept cash for the payment of the purchase of a disposable card. So if a passenger comes on board and says I want to buy $2 or $5 disposable card they give them the cash, the driver will take the cash to give them the card and then they take the card and then they tap the card and that’s how they pay their fare so at the end of the day the bus operator will know for example if he has given the bus driver ten disposable card, he will want that amount of cash if there is only 8 left.”

Sayed-Khaiyum adds a large scale of travelling public has adopted the e-ticketing system.
