After nearly 20 years of waiting, food vendors in Labasa can finally serve and operate under proper shelter.

The Labasa Town Council today officially opened a newly constructed food market shelter, bringing long-awaited relief to vendors and customers who have endured years of harsh conditions.

In the past, many were forced to eat and sell food in the rain and in unhygienic conditions, with no proper facilities. Despite the challenges, women continued to run their food businesses, and customers continued to show support.

Labasa Town Council Chair Paul Jaduram says more than 20 vendors are expected to benefit from the new facility, which can accommodate over 50 people at a time.

“It is proof that when we unite around a common purpose, we can transform challenges into opportunities and compassion into action. To the people of Labasa, this shelter belongs to you, not the council”

Long-time food vendor Nau Diwaqa says the new facility is a dream come true after years of struggle.

She says that they have to go knock at everydoors they were directed to go just to seek assistance for a shelter to be made so people can sit and enjoy their food.

“It’s been years of talks and requests, and today I can only thank God and everyone involved for making this happen for our women. We hope this new facility will help improve our business as we serve our customers”

Special Administrator Samuela Ligairi says the project is long overdue and more developments are in the pipeline, including extending the other wing of the market for parcel vendors, and in the long term, we are planning a three-storey car park where the ground floor will be a carrier stand, while the upper levels will be used for parking.

Meanwhile, the council is urging vendors to maintain cleanliness and take proper care of the new facility, as customers are also encouraged to use it responsibly.
