Mohammed Shaheed Khan one of the two men fronting court over the $30 million heroin bust has been denied bail by the Lautoka High Court.
Justice Thusara Rajasinghe refused Khan’s bail application but has ordered the officer in charge at Natabua Corrections facility to provide protection while he is in custody.
Khan was allegedly assaulted by police officers when he was taken to Suva to appear in another matter.
The second accused Ethan Kai has made his application for bail and a ruling on this will be made on June 19th.
The court today heard oral submissions on the application by Kai’s lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh for a separate trial after the matter was consolidated earlier this year.
Justice Rajasinghe will make his ruling June 19th.
The state wants both the accused to be put on trial together.
Khan and Kai are charged for allegedly importing one of the largest shipments of heroin last December which authorities discovered at Lautoka Wharf.
