A Fiji-born man has made medical history in Australia after becoming the first patient in Perth, Western Australia, to undergo a groundbreaking laser brain surgery for epilepsy.

Harold Nair, 62, originally from Taveuni, underwent the pioneering procedure at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital last week.

Describing the surgery as “life-changing”, Nair said he is already experiencing positive results following the operation.

The father of three has lived with epilepsy for nearly 30 years and was selected to undergo the advanced laser treatment, which targets seizure-causing areas of the brain with precision.

Medical experts say the procedure could offer new hope for thousands of people living with epilepsy across Western Australia and may represent a significant advancement in the treatment of the condition.

Nair was discharged just two days after the surgery and has since returned home to continue his recovery.

He says he has not experienced a seizure since the operation and is recovering well at his Perth residence.

The successful procedure marks a major milestone for healthcare in Western Australia and a proud achievement for the Fiji-born patient at the centre of the medical breakthrough.
