A week after Netflix’s documentary The Crash debuted, police body cam footage has been released showing the devastating moment Dominic Russo’s mother learned her son had died in a car crash involving girlfriend Mackenzie Shirilla.
In the video shared by TMZ, police officers are seen walking up to the Russo family home and speaking with Dominic’s mother Christine Russo, who is sitting on the front porch. When asked when was the last time she saw her son, she explains she saw Dominic the night before.
The officers explain there’s been a serious car crash involving Shirilla, Dominic and his friend Davion Flanagan, and that Dominic and Flanagan did not survive the accident. Christine immediately gets up screaming and crying, with the officers grabbing onto her and asking if there is anyone else they can call for her.
In 2022, Ohio teen Shirilla crashed her car into the side of a building, killing her 20-year-old boyfriend Dominic and 19-year-old friend Flanagan. Netflix’s documentary The Crash examines events surrounding the tragic accident and its aftermath, and features the first interview with Shirilla about what happened that day.
The accident occurred on the morning of July 31, 2022, when Shirilla, accompanied by her boyfriend and Flanagan, drove her 2018 Toyota Camry head-first into a brick building at nearly 100 mph. Prosecutors argued that Shirilla intentionally caused the crash with witnesses claiming she and Dominic had a “toxic” relationship.
Shirilla was arrested in November 2022, and even though she was 17 when the crash occurred, she was tried as an adult.
In August 2023, Shirilla was convicted of murdering Dominic and Flanagan. She is currently serving two concurrent 15-to life sentences at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. In the documentary, Shirilla claims she does not remember what happened during the accident.
Her first parole hearing is in 2037.
