A series of school bus accidents, often in rural areas, have caused public anger over transport safety.

In July, 11 passengers, including kindergarten children and teachers were killed when their bus fell into a reservoir in southern China. In April, eight children died in a crash in Hainan province.

In 2011, 18 nursery school children died after a coal truck hit their overcrowded school van in north-western China.

The incident caused a nationwide outcry and resulted in the government promising more money for school bus services.
