The Digicel Punjas Netball Championships started two hours later than scheduled as match umpires abandoned the event.

Netball Fiji President Wainikiti Bogidrau says the umpires were demanding for more money by the time teams had turned for the tournament this morning.

Organizers eventually roped in team officials from various districts to call the matches.

“We just hope that from here, that this is another learning curve. Unfortunately we left it too late for the umpires to come and discuss this issue but the matter has been resolved.”

Meanwhile, the star-studded Suva side had a good start to the tournament defeating Nadi 28-2 in their first match.

Laced with national reps such as Afa Rusivakula, Nina Cirikisuva and Jane Costello then went on to beat Nadroga, which had the likes of Matila Waqanidrola and Episake Kahatoka by 20-8.

In other results, Taraima Mitchell led her Nasinu team to an 18-9 victory over Northland while Lautoka defeated Navosa 29-6.
