Minivan driver convicted

A 37 year old minivan driver appeared in the Rakiraki Magistrates Court charged with the death of a passenger due to the impact of the accident.

Tevita Yabakivou of Drasa Lautoka is charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning of death, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, one count of driving without driver’s licence, one count of contravening the condition of 3rd party policy risk.

The court heard that on June 2011, the minivan driven by Yabakivou – which was carrying seven passengers hit a bus from the back at Ellington Drive in Rakiraki.

It was travelling from Korovou, Tailevu to Lautoka.

It’s alleged the accused drank kava and liquor until 3am before he driving at around 7am.

He has been remanded and will be sentenced on the 2nd of December.
