Local road contractors stepping up

April 27, 2015 12:37 am

The Fiji Roads Authority is using more local contractors for work in rural areas and for short term projects.

FRA Chief Executive, Neil Cook was on FBCTV’s 4 The Record programme last night and says a lot of the techniques used by New Zealand companies, are now common practice in Fiji.

“The successful ones have adapted, they’ve improved training of staff. We’re not there yet with everything but that’s one example of transfer of knowledge and improvement of practice. A number of those local contractors bid for work on their own right. Those that were unable or unwilling to meet the standards that are being set for a modern roading industry, they’re finding their work elsewhere.”

Cook says many of these local companies were involved with the FRA from the beginning as sub-contractors.

Having seen the potential – they’re now bidding for work on their own.
