Human Rights Chair deplores Facebook post

October 19, 2015 9:55 pm

The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has deplored the actions of a person who posted a picture of a child tied to a pole on Facebook.

The picture was captioned in vernacular and translates to be, “You were told to babysit, you not meant to bite (the child) that’s your punishment for biting my namesake".

Commission Chair, Justice Mohammed Ajmeer says the public should identify the person posting the picture so the child can be protected from abuse.

Justice Mohammed adds it’s also concerning that adults in the family are visible in the picture but are not making any attempt to protect the child.

He says the Commission urgently insists that the Police and Department of Social Welfare conduct investigations and identify the perpetrator and bring him/her to justice.

The post shows a child tied to a pole and is titled as punishment.

The boy is seen to be crying in the picture and some adults are seen in the background.
