Sugarcane farmers around the country have started preparing their fields as the planting season has begun.

Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, Acting Chief Executive, Prem Naidu says the rainy weather for past few days really helped the farmers to prepare their land for the canes.

“One problem associated with climate change is that the weather becomes unpredictable and we have to look for a small window for planting and whenever that opportunity comes you have to take advantage of it.”

Naidu says they are expecting a better harvesting season.

He adds there will be marginal increase from what was harvested in previous years.
