The Chinese Ambassador to Fiji says they will not allow any company with Chinese connections to deteriorate the environment of another country.

Ambassador Qian Bo says Chinese attach great importance to environmental protection and following the rules and regulations of other countries.

“This is an evolving process because for quite a long time – we did not have any sense of protecting the environment but now we do. So, of course, we will not allow companies with connections to China to deteriorate the environment of other countries because this is not our policy.”

Openly speaking about the Malolo development which was under scrutiny for violating Fiji’s environmental act, the ambassador reveals that they looked into the background of the company involved.

“The Fijian Government has never come to us and said that this is a Chinese company but strictly speaking it is not a Chinese company because the owner is from Fiji – because the money comes from outside and not the mainland. But at the same time, I called and caution them that you have to behave responsibly. Whether is a Chinese company or not – from my perspective I caution you to have to act responsibly.”

Ambassador Bo says they will also sanction those companies deteriorating the environment, through their domestic channel if they have connections to China.
