Government looks at measures to cushion fuel price hike impact

April 1, 2026 5:00 pm

The Government is now looking at measures to help cushion the impact of rising fuel prices, while acknowledging the increase that came into effect from today and the pressure it will place on households and businesses.

In a statement, it says it recognises the added financial burden the 20 to 35 percent fuel price hike will have on families, workers, and the business sector across the country.

It says higher fuel prices will flow through the economy, increasing the cost of living and the cost of doing business from transport fares to food and everyday essential goods.

Government says it stands with Fijians during this period and acknowledges the genuine hardship many will face as a result of the increase.

It stresses that the fuel price adjustment was determined by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, which operates as an independent price regulator.

According to Government, this means fuel pricing decisions are made outside its control and are based on global market conditions and established pricing formulas, with international fuel price volatility continuing to drive shocks worldwide.

While it does not set fuel prices, Government says it is actively working on targeted measures to cushion the impact of the increase.

These include possible financial and policy responses aimed at supporting low-income households, assisting businesses facing rising operational costs, and maintaining stability in key economic sectors.

Further details on these mitigation measures are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Government is also encouraging Fijians to use fuel responsibly and adopt more efficient consumption practices where possible.

It says it remains committed to protecting the welfare of citizens and ensuring the country remains resilient in the face of ongoing global economic challenges.
