Fuel price hike not a government decision: Tabuya

April 1, 2026 12:50 pm

Minister for Climate Change and Environment Lynda Tabuya says the recent fuel price increase was not a government decision, but one made independently by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Speaking as a member of the National Security Committee, Tabuya acknowledged public concern following the unexpected rise, which came earlier than previously indicated.

She clarified that the Cabinet did not have the opportunity to review the decision before it was announced.

“The FCCC operates independently under the law, and we respect that process.”

The Minister says the government is now moving quickly to respond, with financial mitigation measures expected to be developed in the coming days in consultation with the Ministry of Finance.

These measures, she says, may include support mechanisms to reduce the burden on consumers, as well as key sectors such as transport operators and businesses.

Tabuya stresses that global fuel market pressures are driving the increase, making it difficult to avoid.

“Now more than ever, we need to be mindful of how we use fuel.”

However, Tabuya says the government remains committed to cushioning the impact on ordinary Fijians.

She is also urging the public to adapt by reducing fuel consumption, encouraging carpooling, public transport use and alternative options like cycling.
