“Me and my siblings when we were growing up, rugby was our life. But for son Meli, he started playing rugby at a really young age at Nawaka District.”

An emotional Vuniani adds he is proud of his son’s achievement.

“I think his obedience, respect, and his values have taken him to such heights. I’m really proud of him and his achievements. I always advise him to put God first in everything he does, and now it’s slowly paying off.”

Known for his crazy offloads, Ratu Meli Derenalagi has become a household name in Fiji after stamping his mark in the World Sevens series.

“It comes as a surprise, but it has meant a lot to me putting into perspective the hard work and effort made during training. I want to thank my teammates as well, without them and their motivation I wouldn’t be standing here today. It motivates me. It was like 23 years ago that I didn’t even see him playing but I’ve heard lots of stories about him, so that motivates me as well and kept me working towards achieving what he has achieved.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways 7s side will arrive in the country today.
