A new booklet will be printed to mark the hundred and forty years of celebration for Girmityas next year.

Speaking to a large crowd gathered at the Civic Center in Nadi to mark the Girmit Remembrance Day celebrations yesterday, Local Government Minister, Parveen Kumar, said a lot of books on Girmit has been published, but this new booklet will include stories that have never been told.

Kumar says this day is set aside to show respect to the legacy and material contribution of the Girmit forefathers.

“There is some Girmit book written but we are in the process or doing another booklet where this untold truth will be printed."

The first batch of indentured labourers arrived on May 14th – 139 years ago onboard the Leonidas.
