Adherence to the COVID-19 advisory is important as most Fijians could be vulnerable to the virus.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says experts and scientists have found that those with underlying health conditions like diabetes, respiratory diseases, hypertension and heart conditions are dying in disproportionate numbers globally.

Dr Waqainabete says for a small country like Fiji, containing COVID-19 from spreading any further is our number one priority.

“It leaves Fiji with a fighting position of vulnerability to experience widespread loss of lives if the virus is not contained.”

Dr Waqainabete says given Fiji’s challenges with non-communicable diseases, neglecting the COVID-19 advisory will put Fijians with pre-existing health conditions at risk.

He adds that this could also stretch our health care system beyond capacity.

The Ministry is urging the public to focus on their nutrition and practice physical distancing.
