Death toll from TC Winston now at 43

The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Winston has now reached 43.

Director National Disaster Management, Akapusi Tuifagalele, confirms the figure has risen by one over the weekend.

Tufagalele says the latest victim is from Koro Island.

There are now 54, 615 people in 899 evacuation centres.

Meanwhile, the Northern Division is waiting tents to be set up as temporary classrooms for students in the most affected schools.

15 schools in the Northern Division have been identified as severely damaged and are closed until further notice.

Commissioner Northern, Jovesa Vocea, says they have requested the National Emergency Operation Centre in Suva to supply the big 10 men tents to be delivered so they can be set up in the affected schools.

Vocea says the rehabilitation of schools is one of the main priority areas that they are looking into now.

Some schools are also still being used as evacuation centers.
