The first load of imported sugar for local consumption is to arrive from Thailand by the end of the month.
Fiji Sugar Corporation Executive Chair-ABDUL KHAN says the Corporation is ready to sell the imported sugar from next month when the price of local sugar will go down by five percent.
KHAN says a total of 27,500 tonnes of sugar will be imported from THAILAND while 3,000 tonnes of raw sugar will be refined locally for local consumption.
According to the FSC’s estimates we use about 30,000 tonnes of sugar annually.
KHAN says the global sugar market price has reduced.
Fiji sells its sugar to London on a negotiated price which is higher than the current world market price.
KHAN adds it’s wise to import sugar for all local use and export most of our sugar to London from this year’s crushing season.
