Overcrowding in Fiji’s Corrections Centers is becoming a problem for law enforcers.
Fiji Corrections Services spokesperson Ana Tudrau has admitted that prisoners are often moved around to facilitate the issue.
Overcrowding has been a major problem with the FCS. To date we don’t have any control over the numbers entering our system.
Tudrau says for inmates at Naboro maximum – a board decides which prisoners are moved from the maximum to the medium.
We have submitted a report requesting for more manpower. We need to have 315 new recruits.
The current ratio of an officer to the inmates is 1:10 which surpasses the internationally recommended 1:4.
The Corrections department is now working at alleviating this problem.
Meanwhile the Fiji Corrections Services is now wrapping up their internal investigations of its own officers which led to the escape of the Naboro five.
