Fiji’s Presidency of the COP23 has yet again ticked another milestone of their list with the launch of the Ocean Path which aims to include ocean health in the global climate talks.

Attorney General and Minister for Climate Change Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji will once again team up with Sweden to carry on the momentum of the UN Oceans Conference which was held in New York in June.

“A pathway that brings together parties and partners to find the right space for the Ocean in the UNFCCC negotiations by 2020, the Ocean Pathway will also work to increase 2020 action in priority areas that use the ocean and are impacted by the oceans and climate change.”

The Minister acknowledging that while they have yet to fine tune the details, climate action on ocean health already has a comprehensive list to start with.

“Improve ocean activities in the NDCs, improve the footprint on maritime, transport, ensure coastal cities, settlements and towns deliver on ocean health as well as adaptation and reducing emissions, restore coastal and marine ecosystems and habitats, reduce pollution and of course the list goes on.”

COP23 will come to a close today after two weeks of intensive deliberations on a range of climate change issues.
