Around one hundred and fifty awards under the Tertiary Scholarship Loans Board were terminated in the last five years.

Chief Executive, Bobby Maharaj confirms these terminations were either by the Board or the Universities.

Maharaj says most of the terminations have been student-driven.

“There are mostly two reasons for terminations that we are currently looking into. One is when the student themselves come to TSLB and advise TSLB that they are terminating their scholarship or the loan scheme for some reason, they may have an alternative job or they may be planning to migrate so that’s the most common type of termination that we have is the one that is driven by the students themselves. Now from TSLB perspective we really don’t terminate students unless they have been terminated by their universities, for example, there could be a disciplinary matter that the university has dealt with or possible they have not progressed well in terms of their academic merits.”

He says they are now looking into these issues.

“As far as TSLB is concerned, we have a full-time counselor at TSLB as well and when we find students which are classified as risk students we do invite and talk to them in terms of what their difficulties are and if their possibly wish to change their program.”

Maharaj says their objective is to ensure that students complete their studies and graduate – and not to abandon their studies.
