500 die from cancer each year in Fiji

500 people in Fiji die each year from cancer.

Fiji Cancer Society says it is concerned that despite numerous campaigns, the number continues to rise.

Society President – Nirmala Nambiar says from the 500 people who die from cancer, 79 per cent are women while 21 per cent are male.

“We continue to see new cases. These are like stomach, stroke, and lung cancer. It’s all increasing. It can be anybody so the main message is if there is any abnormality we would like the women to come forward and talk about it and seek medical help.”

The Fiji Cancer Society yesterday signed a Memorandum of agreement with the Tae Kami Foundation to set up a child cancer resource centre, supporting treatment of young patients and assisting their families.
