The National Job Fair is expected to contribute to lowering the unemployment figures.

The event, a first for Fiji will house more than 30 organizations under one roof offering hundreds of jobs.

Organized by the Employment Ministry and the Fiji Higher Education Commission, the debut event will also provide a pathway for job seekers to consider the array of career choices.

Deputy Secretary from the Ministry of Employment, Vilimone Baledrokadroka says currently there are more than 8, 000 Fijians registered with the National Employment Centre.

He says the National Job Fair is expected to have an impact on these statistics.

“The overall government intent of reducing unemployment to below four percent as stipulated in our five year and 20 year national development plan so it’s also aligned with our National Employment Strategy.”

For the Flour Mills of Fiji as one of the businesses participating in the event, the opportunity is more than just filling 50 positions within the company which they will have on offer.

FMF’s Managing Director, Ram Bajekal says it will also provide an avenue for prospective employees to better understand their business.

“I think the main objective that we are looking at is apart from making known these 50 jobs, we really want to show people the pathway to employment and I think that is more important for us.  We’re not so much about signing up 20 or 30 or 50 or whatever, we want people to see the pathways available, we want to people to see career options available.  We want them to know what a days’ life in a factory is like, what does it look like.”

The National Job Fair will be held from the 24^th to the 25^th of this month at the National Gymnasium in Suva.
